WF MENCAP adults, teenagers and children performed at Leyton Day festival. They loved every minute of their performance, and can't wait to perform again at Light Up Langthorne Park on 1 October 2011. They were a huge hit with fantastic feedback from the audience.
The performance is a simple story about a jungle filled with monkeys, when two leopards come along and prowl - eager to catch them. One of the teenagers is the sun, who lifts the sun to the sound of a flute and belafone, then the monkeys (children) come on stage and do a dance to African drumming. The leopards (adults) prowl onto the stage and monkeys scatter, after which the leopards do a solo piece. The adults move the stage sets (trees and branches, and monkey shadow puppets up in the trees), and the teenagers do an African dance at the end of the performance. The idea behind the piece is to create a magical world, into which the WF MENCAP performers are inviting the audience into - in the same way that London will be welcoming people from different cultures from around the world to the Olympics and Paralympics in 2012. All the WF MENCAP service users involved in the workshps to create the stage, sets and ideas around the costumes were invited to take part in the performance and had a role on stage whether it be dancing, playing an instrument or moving the sets.
