Amount awarded:
£16,536
Duration of grant:
January 2012 to October 2012

View From the Top brings together 120 school pupils and older people, to explore and celebrate life along ‘High Street 2012’ the route from the City eastwards to the Olympic site. Three primary schools will partner three older people’s groups to research working and community life, past and present and after London 2012. Pupils will also visit local workplaces and businesses, from Bow Bus Garage to Whitechapel Bell Foundry, HSBC Whitechapel to Allen&Overy LLP. With poet / storyteller Surya Turner and printmaker Janet Brooke participants will create prints and poems of normally hidden stories, sights and sounds. One 9 metre-long pictorial map/artwork will be created and displayed on the upper-deck ceiling of all the 205 red double-decker buses which serve the High Street, from June-September 2012. Olympic visitors and local travellers will be encouraged to look with fresh eyes at the passing EastEnd streetscape, whilst listening to a podcast soundscape of poems and stories.
